By Sister Morgen Raven - Merry Meet! Today we are going to discuss: CENTERING

Centering is an extension of Grounding and is often practiced alongside it. In order to center, always begin by grounding.

Grounding is more about physical energy. Centering is more about the mental and spiritual energies. It is a little more difficult than Grounding, but also an essential step before performing ritual or magical work. It finishes the transition into the ritual mindset. It brings us to that focused and alert yet relaxed and open feeling from which magical work is most successful.

To center is to locate that part of ourselves where we perceive our true and whole self to reside, the center of our spirit, and to function from and with that center. Centering helps us to reconnect with who and what we truly are if it has been lost in the shuffle of our lives. Life is often reactive; to be centered is to behave based on free will at all times, not in response to stimuli.

Centering is simply returning all of your scattered energies to home base. Usually throughout the day, you have little energy tendrils out doing things while you are attending to business. Perhaps you are at work but with an eye on the clock because you can’t be late to an appointment. Perhaps you are reading this but part of your attention is focused on your weekend plans or an argument you had with your best friend earlier. To center yourself, you call in all your scattered bits of attention, focusing them and bringing them into your body's space.

Centering is a way to self-awareness and owning yourself and your energy. It is bringing all your mental processes into your spiritual center. You call in your energies and release any energy and programs that are not yours or not pertinent to the task at hand. It is necessary to do this in order to have the focus necessary to meditate, visualize, or do magic or healing. It is a sort of spiritual “Pull Yourself Together.”

Again as with Grounding, Centering should be performed before and after magical workings. And it can also assist with focusing with our mundane tasks as well. Centering will help you to function with less reliance on faith and more on what is really transpiring around you.

In addition, centering connects us with the innermost divine part of ourselves—our immanent deity. Though this part of us is present at all times, it is often overlooked and forgotten because of the demands of mundane life. Through centering we find that absolute stillness and calm within us that connects us not just with ourselves but with the entirety of the universe.

Centering Exercise

To Center, begin by Grounding.

Relax and focus on clearing your mind.

Visualize a white light coming up through your “roots” and travel through your body. As it travels, focus your attention on it and feel it bring with it a clarity of being. You become more aware of your surroundings. Colors and sounds and scents are more intense, and you feel your clothing upon you and the slightest breeze against your skin. You are completely aware of your body – your breathing, your heart beat, the blood running through your veins. You are whole and complete, alive and awake.

Bring the light up to your third eye which will awaken your psychic sense. See and feel the light glowing there. Focus on the light breathing quietly until your thoughts quiet and the light is all you are aware of.

Once you find your "center" notice how calm and steady you feel. Say to yourself, “I am balanced, I am centered.”

Don’t forget the next step which is to close the focus. If you keep the third eye open and overuse it, it will begin to ache. Visualize the light traveling back down your body into the ground.

The third eye will continue to function but not that intensely. And the state of being Centered will also not discontinue immediately but you will slowly return back to your normal state.

This concludes this Lesson.
