A Lesson on Grounding

By Sister Morgen Raven - Merry Meet! Today we are going to discuss: GROUNDING

Grounding is simply the process of anchoring your energetic body to the Earth. You then create a circuit of your own flow of energy with that of the Earth.

The Earth is a huge source of powerful life-nourishing energy. We draw on this to add to our own. Thus, when we expend energy, we are not just depleting our own personal power (the energy that we already had within our bodies) but are also using that of the earth in conjunction with our own to accomplish our goal.

We also ground to shunt excess energy back into the Earth. Think of a three-pronged electrical plug, which has the third prong in it to help ground the excess electrical energy if it builds up. Using this form of outlet avoids an overflow of energy in your own closed system which can lead to the system shorting out. Unpleasant side effects of this “shorting out” can include becoming dizzy, sick, tired or developing a headache.

So, when grounding, make sure that you are not creating a one-way channel. The flow should go both ways as needed. Think of it as a circuit. Draw as you need energy and let it return as it builds to excessive levels.

Grounding is of paramount importance when doing magical work but can also be very helpful in our mundane life as well. When we are grounded we often are peaceful, physically coordinated, confident, calm, and in control. Ground when you are feeling any of the below symptoms:

Dizzy or disorientated

Clumsy, bumping into things

Tired, scattered

Emotional, stressed or worried

Anxious, unsure, uneasy or nervous

Spacey, overwhelmed, or confused

Forgetful

Low in energy

Depressed

Irritated, aggressive or angry for no particular reason

Grounding can be done via a simple visualization technique which will be described below.

It is easiest to learn to ground while standing, but it can be performed while in any position. And it is easiest to learn to ground while in direct contact with the earth, but it can be performed anywhere. The earth works just as well as a concept once your mind is trained. Even if you are at the top of a tall building or in an airplane, you should be able to think down and work your way energetically to the earth.

The essence of most grounding methods is to relax and visualize an energy cord or light beam sent into the core of the earth from your root chakra (at the tailbone). Some people may feel a light swaying while others will feel a noticeable pull on the feet or spine.

The tree visualization is probably the most common grounding visualization. It is so natural and easy that you can teach it to children to calm them.

And the tree symbol of the visualization lends itself easily to the task as its roots dig deep into the earth keeping the topside of the tree firmly affixed to the earth. The roots of the tree serve as a conduit to draw nourishment to the tree just as we will draw energy from the earth.

We move and trees don’t. Beginners will often have difficulty retaining a feeling of grounding once they have moved from their original position. It is not uncommon to need to re-ground a few times throughout the course of a ritual until they learn to move the ground with them.

The Earth’s energy is so vast that tapping into it is like siphoning off a drop of water from the ocean. Insignificant though it may seem, tapping this energy does not, however, go unnoticed. It’s always a good idea to acknowledge the gift and give a small word of gratitude when you are done.

The following meditation is a good exercise for learning to ground. As you practice, you will develop your own variations. Do it often to get acclimated to the sensations. When entering a group ritual, when time is short, you can learn to ground in just a few seconds.

TREE MEDITATION

Begin breathing slowly and deeply, with in-breath and out-breath of approximately the same length. 4-count is good.

Shrug or roll your shoulders, carefully roll your head around your neck, and try to tense and relax all the major muscles of your body, starting with your feet and working to your face.

Imagine a taproot extending from the bottom of your spine and heading down into the soil.

With each out-breath, your roots grow and spread and reach deeper into the soil. Also feel stress and tension flow out of your roots with each out-breath. Keep focusing and extending your roots.

With each in-breath, feel yourself pulling cool, earthy, grounding energy from the soil and Mother Earth. Feel that energy move slowly through your “trunk,” down your “limbs” and into every cell in your body. When your body is full of this grounding energy, feel it begin to exit through the top of your head.

Now that you have grounded, imagine your arms are limbs and are reaching toward the sky, toward the sun, the source of energy that nourishes life on earth.

With each out-breath, your branches reach further into the sky. Release tension and stress. Feel your branches growing.

With each in-breath, breathe in the light, warm, energizing sunlight, allowing it to flow down from your “branches” and “trunk” to each part of your body and into each cell.

Feel the energies of earth and sky mixing within you. When you are full of this vitality, let the energy seep down and out of your roots.

Feel how grounded, calm, and centered you are, but also energized, focused, and with broader perspective.

When you feel complete with this experience, slowly increase your breathing, feel yourself return to your body, stretch, and open your eyes.
