There are energies that surround us and bombard us every day. Some are good and some bad. They affect our emotional and spiritual bodies.
Most of the time, it is best to just be aware of those energies around you. There are times you want to be fully open to them and times when you want to be fully protected from them. And, there are times when you want to only be partially shielded. A permeable shield can be built that is selective: It allows some energies to pass and prohibits others from entering your space.

It is important to learn when to shield. Sometimes you simply know that you must shield when walking into a particular situation. A crowded mall in December is a good example. Other times you may feel a little “tickle” in your aura and that will be your clue to determine if a shield is necessary. Note that shielding should not be done constantly or for long amounts of time as they can cause discomfort and headaches. Imagine enclosing yourself in a cocoon for long periods of time. Health issues could become an issue. Definitely shield when you are feeling threatened or defensive. Also remember to shield when you are being bombarded by someone’s emotions. These attacks are not always a direct assault on you. They can be caused by traumatic events or people emoting too much on you. Shield yourself in order to be able to differentiate your emotions from the ones you are around.
It is also important to learn how to shield yourself. It is not a difficult thing to do but it takes practice to learn how to do it exactly as you wish for the particular situation and to keep it in place for the desired amount of time.
Shields are a thought form. But thoughts are things. And these forms of thought are very effective. Their effect may be subtle in the physical world, but they are very effective in the other, less solid realms.
Those of us who understand and work with shields set them up deliberately. Muggles use shields too, though they seldom have any idea what they are doing. You will learn to see or at least feel the shields that others have constructed. There is often one person at the party who looks pleasant enough but gives off the “don’t approach me” message. That is a shield. Persons with prickly shields can clear a room. Using shields can protect you from incoming energy, but they can also be quite effective when you need people to respect your personal space.
One of the easiest ways to envision your shield is like a blanket. Imagine wrapping yourself head to toe in a blanket made of light. White or purple is common.
Surrounding yourself with a bubble makes it easier to move about. The first step to doing this is to become aware of the boundaries of your aura. Some people have auras that are tight to their body. Others have auras that reach out more. Learn where yours ends and use that as the boundaries of your shield. If your aura is very diffuse, you might want to rein it in a bit.
Visualize an intense energy coming from within yourself to surround you. Envision it growing and expanding with intensity and brightness. Many people use the image of a white light for this shield; you can use whatever color feels right. Some people use other imagery such as a wall, an armor, a balloon, spikes, or swirling clouds. A shield can look like anything you wish. But the most simple is white light or a clear bubble.

However you choose to envision it, define the barrier in such a way that any energy that is not for your highest good will not be able to penetrate it. It will either be reflected back to the source, or slide off and fall to the ground to be absorbed into the earth, or otherwise be destroyed when it comes in contact with you.
